The Reading Time Calculator divides your word count by a reading speed to tell you how long the text takes to read. It defaults to 200 words per minute — the widely used average for adult silent reading — and a slider lets you adjust anywhere from 100 WPM (careful, technical reading) to 400 WPM (skimming or trained fast readers).

The result is shown in minutes and seconds rather than a vague rounded figure, and the estimate is deliberately rounded up: it is better to promise readers 6 minutes and have them finish early than the reverse.

The calculation runs in your browser as you type, so you can paste an unpublished manuscript or internal document without it leaving your device.

Publishers put 'X min read' labels on articles because they measurably help engagement — readers are more willing to start an article when they know the commitment upfront. This tool gives you that number for your own posts, using the same words-divided-by-WPM method Medium popularized.

It also works as a planning tool. A student with 6,000 words of assigned reading knows at 200 WPM that's a 30-minute block. Because the speed is adjustable, you can model different audiences: drop to 130–150 WPM for second-language readers or dense technical material, push to 250+ for light news content.
