Speaking Time Calculator

The Speaking Time Calculator converts a word count into speaking duration. It defaults to 130 words per minute — a clear, conversational pace — with a slider covering 90 WPM (slow and deliberate, good for eulogies or technical explanations) up to 200 WPM (rapid, energetic delivery).

This is a different calculation from reading time. People read silently at around 200 WPM but speak at 110–150 WPM, which is why a script that 'reads fine' routinely blows past its time slot when delivered aloud.

The estimate updates as you edit the script, and your text stays in your browser throughout.

Time slots are unforgiving. A best-man toast that should be 3 minutes, a conference talk capped at 18, a 30-second radio ad — all of them are word-budget problems. At 130 WPM, those budgets are roughly 390 words, 2,300 words, and 65 words respectively. This calculator lets you check your draft against the slot before you rehearse.

Podcasters and YouTubers use it in reverse: if your show format is 10 minutes, you know to write about 1,300 words of script. Voice-over artists quoting per finished minute can estimate session length from the script alone.

The adjustable pace also accounts for delivery style. Nervous speakers rush toward 160+ WPM; seasoned presenters slow down and add pauses. Timing your script at your real pace — not an idealized one — is what keeps you inside the slot on the day.
