Word Counter

The Word Counter measures your text as you type or paste it, showing five statistics at once: words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, and paragraphs. There is no button to press — the numbers update live with every keystroke.

Words are counted by splitting the text on spaces and line breaks, which is the same method most word processors use. Sentences are detected from ending punctuation (periods, question marks, and exclamation points), and paragraphs are counted wherever a blank line separates blocks of text.

Everything runs in your browser. The text you paste is never uploaded to a server, so it is safe to check confidential drafts, unpublished articles, or graded coursework.

Most writing has a length requirement attached. College application essays are capped at 650 words on the Common App, many scholarship essays require exactly 500, and editors often commission articles at a fixed length. Submitting text that is noticeably over or under the limit can get it rejected before anyone reads it.

Length also matters for the web. Meta descriptions get truncated around 160 characters in Google results, and posts on X (Twitter) are limited to 280 characters. Because this tool shows words and characters side by side, you can check both limits in one place.

The sentence and paragraph counts are useful for editing. If you have 40 sentences packed into 3 paragraphs, your text is probably hard to scan — the breakdown makes that visible before your readers feel it.
