Sentence Counter

The Sentence Counter scans your text and reports three things: the number of sentences, the number of words, and the average words per sentence. It detects sentence boundaries from ending punctuation — periods, question marks, exclamation points, and ellipses are all treated as sentence endings.

Average sentence length is the most practical of the three numbers. Readability research consistently lands in the same range: text averaging 15–20 words per sentence is comfortable for most adult readers, while averages above 25 start to feel dense and academic.

The count updates live as you edit, and your text stays in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

When editors say a draft 'doesn't flow,' long sentences are usually the culprit. Pasting your draft here gives you an objective number to work with. If your average is 28 words per sentence, you know exactly what to fix: split sentences, cut subordinate clauses, and re-check.

It's also useful for matching a target style. Marketing copy often averages under 14 words per sentence; academic writing runs over 20. If you're adapting a technical document for a general audience, watching this number drop is a concrete way to measure progress.

Teachers and students use it the other way around — to verify that an assignment meets requirements like 'a paragraph of at least five sentences' without counting by hand.
